DeltaV Smart Switches > Commissioning and monitoring DeltaV Smart Switches

Smart Switch commissioning options and other considerations

Depending on the size and complexity of your DeltaV system and other requirements you may have, you can alter the recommended process when commissioning Smart Switches. This section outlines the options.

Plant Areas and switch alarming

Consider how PlantWeb alarms from Smart Switches should be reported to alarm displays and Event Chronicles and if desired, create plant areas to which Smart Switches can be assigned. You may want to reserve one or more Plant Areas for Smart Switches. You may also want to divide responsibility for switches among different personnel.

Assigning switches to workstation virtual controllers

If you have a large system you may need to assign switches to multiple virtual controllers (ProfessionalPLUS and Application station Assigned Modules folders).

Note

It is recommended that you assign no more than 100 switches to a single virtual controller.

Before you assign switches to workstation virtual controllers the workstations must be created in DeltaV Explorer, physically connected to the network, and operating properly.

Another possibility is to assign the switch modules for switches on the primary network to one workstation's virtual controller, and the modules for switches on the secondary network to a different workstation's virtual controller. If all switch modules are assigned to one workstation, the loss of that workstation results in no switch information being available.
