DeltaV Smart Switches > Commissioning and monitoring DeltaV Smart Switches

Manually commissioning Smart Switches

The recommended method of commissioning switches is to use the Network Device Command Center (NDCC). NDCC automates most of the effort required to commission a switch.

If your plant policy requires that network devices be assigned IP addresses before being connected to the network and that those IP addresses do not change while the devices are connected to the network, it is recommended that the policy be changed so that you can use NDCC to manage Smart switches, including assigning IP addresses to them. (NDCC assigns IP addresses automatically and you cannot change them.)

If it is not possible to change the policy you must manually commission switches.

Note

Manually commissioning switches takes a large number of steps. Any errors you make in completing the steps may cause the switches to function in unexpected ways.

You must complete three tasks, in order, to successfully commission smart switches manually:

  1. Prepare — Decide if you need both Smart Switch module classes or not and edit the classes as required. Compile a list of the switches you are commissioning along with the IP addresses you are going to assign them.
  2. Create and download switch modules — Use DeltaV Explorer to create a module for every switch you are going to commission. Download the switch modules from the ProfessionalPLUS (that is appropriately licensed).
  3. Assign IP addresses to the switches — Use the serial port interface on each switch to set the IP address and other basic configuration information.

The following sections explain these tasks in detail.
