Seat licenses bundle existing licenses for continuous and batch
engineering functions. Some variations of the seat licenses support floating
license capability and temporary license capability.
- Floating license
- A floating license is not assigned to a particular workstation. The
system automatically allocates and releases floating licenses based on user
login and access to certain applications. This is a flexible approach for
providing licensing where the number of simultaneous users is consistently
smaller than the number of workstations.
- When you start up an application, it attempts to acquire a floating
license unless there is an appropriate license already allocated to the
workstation. If the application is unsuccessful in acquiring a floating
license, the application will not run, or will run in a limited feature mode.
- Temporary license
- Temporary licenses expire after a certain period of time. These are
ideal for obtaining license capacity for a short-term high work load (for
example, during a startup).
- Permanent license
- Seat licenses that support floating can be permanently assigned to
a particular workstation but would typically be allowed to float so that they
can be used anywhere by any appropriate user. When assigned to a workstation, a
seat license is referred to as a permanent license.
The Floating License Manager application shows the available and
unavailable floating licenses and who is using the unavailable licenses. For
temporary floating licenses, the Floating License Manager shows the days
remaining along with other details.
