Back up the security settings

The following procedure requires the MMC snap-in (Microsoft Management Console), and it only applies to workstations and servers in a domain environment. You must have privileges to write to the file system where you are storing the backed up settings.

  1. Go to Start → Run and type Group Policy Management Console and press Enter.

The application can also be launched by typing GPMC at the command prompt (CMD.exe) and then press Enter.

  2. In the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC) console tree, go to the forest and domain containing the Group Policy object (GPO) and then open the GPO to be backed up.
  3. Select the GPOs to back up.
    • To back up a single GPO, right-click the GPO and click Back Up.
    • To back up all GPOs in the domain, right-click the Group Policy objects and click Back Up All.
  4. Enter the directory path or browse for the storage folder to save the backup.
  5. In the Description field, enter a description for the GPOs you are backing up. If you are backing up multiple GPOs, the description applies to all GPOs selected.
  6. Click Back Up.
  7. Click OK when finished.
  8. Using Windows Explorer, browse for the folder containing your GPO backup.
  9. Select the folder and then copy or move it to an archive location.
    Important

Do not change the name of the folder or any of the items in the folder created by the backup.

  10. Proceed with making changes to the user customizable settings in the GPO editor.
