Plan your system for using Remote Desktop Gateway with DeltaV

This procedure outlines the steps needed before installing any software.

The first steps to using the Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway) are to map where all the computers are that will access the DeltaV system, determine where you will locate the Remote Desktop Gateway, and obtain the certificates needed.

  1. Create a map of the relevant networks.
    These networks include:
    • Locate the remote computers; that is, the computers that will use Remote Desktop Client to access the DeltaV node. Record their domain (or workgroup) membership, their computer name, and IP addresses.
    • Map the connections from remote computers to the RD Gateway (switches/hubs/firewalls to traverse). The appropriate ports will need to be open to allow RDP traffic to the RD Gateway.
    • Map the connections from RD Gateway to the DeltaV Remote Desktop Server. Normally, the RD Gateway will be in the DMZ with a firewall between it and the DeltaV Remote Desktop Server.
  2. Create a table of the network addresses being used for remote access for the following computers:
    • DeltaV Remote Desktop Server
    • RD Gateway
    • Remote computers
  3. Determine the type of certificate you will use and get the certificate created.

All certificates must be SSL-compatible X.509 certificates.

The following are the valid types of certificates:
    • Internally created/maintained stand-alone or enterprise CA (not self-signed)
    • Externally created certificate purchased from a public CA that participates in the Microsoft Root Certificate Program Members program.
    • A self-signed certificate. (only supported for testing and evaluation of the RD Gateway)
