Commission a switch

You can commission a switch in a number of ways:
  • Using the Commission context menu item on a selected decommissioned switch in either the Tree View or the Summary pane.
  • Dragging and dropping a decommissioned switch onto the Commissioned Switches node in the Tree View pane.
  • Dragging and dropping a switch from the decommissioned device list to the corresponding network's commissioned devices item in the hierarchy.
  1. Initiate the commissioning of a switch by one of the methods listed above.
    The Commission dialog appears.
  2. Enter the required information in the Commission dialog.
  3. Click Commission.

The information in the dialog is validated. If no errors are detected, the dialog closes and the Switch Commissioning Status dialog opens. The status dialog lists the commissioning actions occurring.

If the initial steps of commissioning are successful, a Confirm Partial Download dialog appears.

NDCC generates a switch management password during commissioning. The password is stored in the switch module's MGINFO parameter and is used by NDCC whenever it needs to communicate with the switch. A

    Note

When commissioning a switch on the level 2.5 network, storm control is disabled.

For switches and the firewall on the level 2.5 network, you must enable the SNMP rule using DeltaV Security Administration application.

  4. Click Yes on the dialog.
  5. When the download is successful, click the Close button.
The Commission Status dialog appears and continues updating until commissioning is complete.
  6. Click Close on the dialog.

If commissioning is successful, the switch icon in the Decommissioned Switches branch of the hierarchy is removed and an icon with the name you gave the switch appears in the Commissioned Switches branch of the hierarchy

When errors do occur in commissioning a switch

If an error is encountered the commissioning fails and an error message appears. Refer to the log file (\DVData\NDCCOperationsProgress.log) for information on the errors.

If commissioning does not complete, any action that has completed successfully is not undone. Thus, it is important to take note of the following cases:
  • If the error occurred during switch module creation, the IP address and commissioning information has already been successfully written to the switch. The switch appears in the list of commissioned switches and you will have to restore the switch to its default settings and commission it again.
  • If the error occurred during switch module download, the switch module for the switch has been created and assigned to a workstation. You must manually download the workstation in DeltaV Explorer to complete the switch commissioning process.
  • If the error occurred during switch management password creation, the commissioning process will fail. Commission the switch again.
Finally, there are some behaviors to note when commissioning by dragging and dropping switches:
  • A decommissioned switch can be dropped onto the Commissioned Switches node. Doing so will commission the switch using the IP address for the corresponding control network where the switch cam from (that is, if the decommissioned switch came from the primary network, the commissioning process assigns a Primary Network IP address to the switch).
  • A decommissioned switch can be dropped onto the commissioned Primary Network node only if it originally came from the decommissioned Primary Network node.
  • A decommissioned switch can be dropped onto the commissioned Secondary Network node only if it originally came from the decommissioned Secondary Network node.
