Lock switches

After switches are commissioned, lock them down to prevent unauthorized devices from being connected. When a switch is locked, all unused ports on the switch are disabled and communication with these ports is prevented.

If a device that was connected at the time the switch was locked is disconnected and a different device is connected to the port, the switch refuses the connection. If the original device is reconnected to the same port, the switch reestablishes connections with the device.

Power cycling a switch does not enable unwanted connections. When a switch is power cycled, it comes back up in the last locked or unlocked state.

You can invoke the command from the context (right click) menu in several locations:
  • From the Commissioned Devices list.
  • From the network's Summary pane.
  • From the individual switch.
Note

The Lock command is disabled for switches with software version 04.2.03 and for switches that are commissioned but not communicating.

  1. Select one of more switches as explained above.
  2. From the context menu, select the Lock option.

The wording of the option varies depending on what you have selected to lock.

    The Lockdown Status dialog appears.
  3. Click Begin to lock the selected switches.
The Lockdown Status dialog reports the actions being taken for each switch being locked. If a switch's name is not known (switches with non-communicating switch modules), the Lockdown Status dialog includes the IP address. If a switch cannot be locked, the Lockdown Status dialog reports the failure and continues to lock the remaining switches.
