Change the virtual machine's name

This procedure describes how to modify the name of the virtual machine after it is created.

It is recommended to name the virtual machine to an appropriate and meaningful name when creating it. However, you can rename the visible (friendly) name after the virtual machine is created.

  1. Open the VirtualBox Manager.
  2. Shut down the virtual machine.

Choose the option that mimics gracefully powering down a machine (versus simply pulling the power cord). Options can vary by VirtualBox version.

  3. Open the virtual machine's Settings dialog.
  4. Click the General page's Basic tab.
  5. In the Name field, enter the new name. This name is the friendly display name that you see in VirtualBox' list of virtual machines.
  6. If you have not taken any snapshots of this machine, change the snapshot location to a folder that matches the new friendly name.

    Note

If you taken snapshots of this virtual machine, you must first delete the existing snapshots before you can change the snapshot folder.

  7. When done, close all windows and dialogs (saving if prompted) and restart the virtual machine.
