Understanding recipes

A recipe is, according to the S88.01 standards, a set of information that uniquely identifies the ingredients, the quantities of ingredients, and the production equipment required to manufacture a product.

A recipe defines a sequence of control functions that are started and stopped in a specific order, the variables, and the equipment used to produce a batch. Recipes enable a batch plant to use the same process equipment to produce many different products or product formulations.

A recipe is the information that identifies the following manufacturing requirements of a specific product:

  • The necessary ingredients

  • The quantities of each ingredient

  • The production equipment (such as mixers, holding tanks, and ovens) needed to make the product

  • The order in which tasks are performed
