Selecting the parameter's category when defining the parameter.

Parameter Categories
Category	Data Type	Description
Process Input	Real, Integer, String, Named Set	The identification and quantity of a raw material or other resource required to make a product.
Process Output	Real, Integer, String, Named Set	An identification and quantity of material or energy expected to result from one execution of a control recipe.
Process Report	Real, Integer, String, Named Set	Information calculated earlier (in the phase).
Process Parameter	Real, Integer, String, Named Set	Information that is needed to manufacture a material but does not fall into the classification of process input or process output. Note Examples of process parameter information are temperature, pressure, and time.

Only parameters of the category Process Input can be deferred (to both input and report parameters). Only parameters of the category Process Report can be referred (to other report parameters).
