Controller considerations > Physically decommissioning DeltaV nodes after changing databases

Physically decommissioning controllers

The controller hardware must be physically removed from its carrier to initialize it to its decommissioned state. Removing the controller from its carrier clears the controller's commissioning and cold restart data.
Note

The ProfessionalPlus maintains a commissioning file for each controller in the database. If the node is not decommissioned in the database, it is possible for the ProfessionalPlus to automatically recommission the controller when it is reinstalled. This will not occur if nodes are decommissioned before exchanging databases.

Decommission a simplex controller

  1. Remove the simplex controller from its carrier and wait for 10 seconds.
  2. Reinstall the controller on the carrier.

Decommission a redundant controller pair

  1. Remove both the standby and active controllers from the carrier and wait for 10 seconds.
Both controllers must be removed otherwise the standby will become the active node and the node will remain unavailable to the database.
  2. Reinstall the controllers on the carrier.
