Use caution when configuring the default behavior for devices that act as final control elements. In some cases, the default behavior can cause unintended consequences even if the device is no longer commissioned.
Some devices, such as actuators and valves, can be programmed to open or close by default based on a specific state. This can cause unpredictable behavior especially if the device is a final control element in a process. For example, suppose that a final control element such as an actuator has been configured to open or close if it goes into a non-commissioned state. In such a situation, decommissioning the device will cause the actuator to move.
