Configuring where displays open in a layout

This topic explains the behaviors that can be configured to define where displays open in a DeltaV Live layout and how to configure each of these behaviors.

Note:
All of the following methods are configured in Graphics Studio, in the Graphics Configuration pane.

Option 1: Configure a designated display frame for each hierarchy level:
  1. Object/Element
    Display Frame

    Property group
    Navigation Bar
    Action
Select the Enable Navigation Bar check box
  2. Object/Element

    Property group
    Automatic Display Coordination
    Action
    • Select the Auto-open Display Levels check box
    • Select the check box next to the level of display that will open in this display frame
When a display is opened from a menu bar, where it opens in the layout is determined by the following configuration order:
  1. If a display frame is designated for the hierarchy level of the requested display, the display opens in that display frame.
  2. If a display frame is NOT designated for the hierarchy level of the requested display, the display opens in the target display frame defined for that screen.
  3. If neither number one or number two are configured, the display opens as a popup.
A display's hierarchy level is determined by its position in the active display set.
Important:

Emerson recommends defining a target display frame for each screen.

Doing so ensures that if a display opened from a menu bar does not have a designated home in the layout (through the Auto-open Display levels property), it will still open in a display frame.

Contextual displays opened from Search open as popups.

Option 2: Configure a fallback Target Display Frame for displays that do not have a designated home in the layout:

Object/Element tab
Basics
Property group
Display Frame
Action
On Target Display Frame, select the display frame in which these displays can open.

Opening main displays from contextual displays

When a display is opened from a contextual display, where it opens in the layout is determined by the following configuration order:
  1. If the requested display has a designated destination in the layout (based on its hierarchy level), the display opens in the display frame designated for that hierarchy level.
  2. If the requested display does not have a designated destination in the layout (based on its hierarchy level), the location of the contextual display determines where the display is opened. That is:
    • If the top left of the contextual display is on top of a dynamic display frame, the display opens in that frame.
    • If the top left of the contextual display is on top of a static frame, the display opens in the target display frame specified for that static frame.
  3. If the top left of the contextual display is on top of a screen rather than a display frame, the display opens in the Target Display Frame specified for that screen.
  4. If the top left of the contextual display is on top of a screen with no configured target frame, or the contextual display is outside of the layout, the display opens as a popup.
