The upgrade process upgrades DeltaV controllers, Remote I/O Nodes, I/O modules, SIS components, H1 fieldbus devices, Wireless I/O Cards, and CHARM I/O Cards and CHARMs by downloading a new software image to specific controller cards and devices in the DeltaV system. The upgrade process can have serious negative effects if it is not performed properly. Only qualified personnel should attempt the upgrade process.
CAUTION!The upgrade process can have serious negative effects if it is not performed properly. Only qualified personnel should attempt device upgrades. The best practice is to upgrade the controller before upgrading the I/O (including CIOCs and CHARMs) rather than upgrading the controller and the I/O at the same time. Unpredictable behavior can result if you upgrade the controller and I/O at the same time (including CIOCs and CHARMs).
The files used to flash the firmware are digitally signed. If the digital signature is missing or the file has been corrupted or modified, you are prevented from flashing the firmware. A basic error is displayed directing you to contact an administrator for information. You will need to replace the file being used with a valid, signed file
To successfully upgrade controllers and Remote I/O Nodes, you will need to know the controller and Remote I/O Node name and the name and location of the upgrade file (filename.udf). The upgrade file contains all the information needed to successfully perform the upgrade.
You can use the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility program to:
To successfully upgrade I/O cards, you will need to know the controller name, the name and location of the I/O module upgrade file (filename.idf), and the Passthrough Message Server (PTM) must be installed and running. Contact your system administrator to be sure the PTM server is installed and running.
All cards except the Series 1 Discrete cards can be upgraded.
The DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility supports upgrading of one or more H1 fieldbus devices. Only devices that are commissioned or in standby are available for upgrading. H1 fieldbus devices whose Download Class is “1” may be upgraded while they are commissioned; it is not necessary for them to be in Standby mode. These devices are frequently referred to as “Class 1 devices.” Class 2 and Class 3 devices, however, must be put in Standby before upgrading.
To upgrade an H1 fieldbus device, you must know the port to which the device is connected and the name and location of the upgrade file (filename.ffd). Software upgrade files are supplied by the device manufacturer and should not be modified or renamed. You can download and immediately activate new software or choose to download and activate at a later time. You can also revert to a previous software version still saved in the device.
When you want to download new software to a device, the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utilitygives you the option to select an upgrade file and let the system find the devices that can be upgraded with it or to select the devices and then select an upgrade file for each device.
When the new software is activated, it may cause a device revision change. If it does, Class 2 and 3 devices must be put in Standby, downloaded with the new software and activated. Class 1 devices may be downloaded with new software while they are commissioned, but must be put in Standby for the activation. For all device classes, when the new software causes a device revision change, the devices must be recommissioned and downloaded with new configuration data (using the DeltaV Explorer) after the activation completes. If the DeltaV system does not support the new revision, the revision must be added through the AMS Device Manager. Click on the Server Plus Station to add a new device revision. Refer to AMS Device Manager Books Online for complete information.
When a fieldbus device upgrade starts, you are given an estimate of the upgrade time. If necessary, you can cancel the download portion of the upgrade; the running version of the software will not be affected. However, if a previous software version was stored in the second memory domain of the device, you will not be able to revert to that version, because it is cleared at the beginning of the upgrade process.
To upgrade Logic Solvers and SISNet Repeaters select the DeltaV SIS Components option from the drop-down list on the opening window of the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility program. Be sure that the Logic Solver is decommissioned and the controller with which it is communicating is commissioned before starting the upgrade process. The controller must be commissioned, not necessarily configured/downloaded before starting the upgrade. If you are upgrading a redundant Logic Solver, be sure to upgrade both cards in the redundant pair to the same revision.
Upgrading a single Logic Solver can take between five and ten minutes.
SISNet Repeaters appear in slots 65 and 66 on the screen that lists the available SIS components to upgrade. Scroll the list to find SISNet Repeaters.
To upgrade CHARMs Smart Logic Solvers (CSLS) and LS CHARMs, select the DeltaV SIS Components option from the drop-down list on the opening window of the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility program, select the SZ Controller that is communicating with the CSLS and LS CHARMs and then select either the CSLS or LS CHARMs radio button. Be sure that the CSLS is decommissioned and the SZ Controller with which it is communicating is commissioned before upgrading CSLS or LS CHARMs. The controller must be commissioned and downloaded before starting the upgrade. If you are upgrading a redundant CSLS, be sure to upgrade both cards in the redundant pair to the same revision.
To upgrade a CHARM I/O Card (CIOC) only, select the CHARM I/O Card option from the drop-down list on the opening window of the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility program. To upgrade CHARMs, select the CHARM Components option from the drop-down list. Be sure that the CIOC is commissioned before starting the upgrade.
You can select multiple CHARMs for upgrade.
Upgrading the active CIOC in a redundant pair causes an automatic switchover to the standby CIOC. Instead of upgrading the active CIOC directly, we recommend that you perform a manual redundancy switchover using DeltaV Diagnostics and then upgrade the standby CIOC.
To upgrade a Wireless I/O Card (WIOC), select the Wireless I/O Card option from the drop-down list on the opening window of the DeltaV Controller and I/O Upgrade Utility program. Be sure that the WIOC is commissioned before starting the upgrade.
Upgrading the active WIOC in a redundant pair causes an automatic switchover to the standby WIOC. Instead of upgrading the active WIOC directly, we recommend that you perform a manual redundancy switchover using DeltaV Diagnostics and then upgrade the standby WIOC.
