Fieldbus device commissioning and decommissioning overview
Commissioning fieldbus devices is the process of fully incorporating a fieldbus device into the DeltaV system by assigning its address and name in Explorer.
You can commission a fieldbus device that is in the standby state by dragging the device to a port on a fieldbus card, or by dragging the device to a fieldbus device placeholder. A device placeholder is one that you have created in the database, but for which no physical device is associated.
Decommissioning is the process of moving a fieldbus device to a state that allows you to remove it from the segment. There are two decommissioned states: Offline and Spare. The offline state is typically used for temporary removal. If an off-line device is reconnected, it automatically uses a standby address. You must commission the standby device by dragging and dropping it onto the appropriate placeholder. After the device is commissioned, download the device in order to make it function as it did prior to being decommissioned.
To understand the process of commissioning and decommissioning, it is important to understand the various states and how a fieldbus device moves from one state to another. Refer to the Books Online article below for more information.
